ITOH et la société brésilienne CVRD auraient signé avec le gouvernement tunisien un accord préliminaire sur la construction à Gabès d'une usine de réduction directe de minerai de fer alimentée en minerai brésilien (1,5 MT/an)et qui produirait 1 MT/an d'éponte de fer, destinées à l'exportation en Europe et dans le bassin méditerranéen. L'usine serait chauffée au gaz naturel provenant de gisements tunisiens. Les investissements prévus seraient estimés à 55 M dol.US.
