" A field study has been carried out within the eastern part of the north Maghrebian mountain ranges in Northern Tunisia (Teboursouk-Medjez Al Bab area), in order to clarify (at regional scale)the relaioships between compression and extension during the Quaternary. In fact, this region is caracterized by active tectonics, associating both NW-SE compressive (NE-SW thrusts and folds)and NE-SW extensional (NW-SE normal faults)structures accompanied by NW-SE right lateral strike-slip faults. These different structures are all intricately imbricated and can be observed at different scales. This general setting implies an important local variation of the stress stade : for instance, this passes from a NW-SE compression on the south-western flank of the El Cheid mountains fault zone NE-SW extension at the Gafour-El Aroussa basin. These results are in good agreement with the roughly north-south convergence between Africa and Eurasia.
