T. 39 (NLD) Chem. Geol. T. 39 Geochemistry of brines of the chott el Jerid in Southern Tunisia - Application of Pitzer's equations. Géochimie des saumures du chott el Jerid au Sud de la Tunisie. Application des équations de Pitzer. In the chott El Jerid in southern Tunisia, waters are strongly concentrated by evaporation under an arid climate. The diluted waters are of the Ca-Mg-SO4 type whereas the brines are of the Na-Cl type, relatively concentrated in K and Mg. In concentrated waters, Ca and silica concentrations remain at a very low level. The use of Pitzer's equations for calculating the ion activities has permitted accurate saturation tests and a fairly good evaluation of the mineral sequences controlling the geochemistry of the basin.
