(DEU) Berl. Geowiss Abh. Reihe A. geol. Palaeontol. Evaporation of groundwater in the Sahara evaporation de l'eau souterraine au Sahara caractères régionaux et utilisation des données satèllitaires. regional character and application of satellite data. The relevance of groundwater losses by evaporation in the Sahara is stressed in relation with long term planning of groundwater extraction. The total evaporation losses have to be calculated for very large areas. The approach to obtain evaporation at the surface by determining the other terms of the surface energy balance is outlined. Examples of the relationship between latent heat flux and surface temperature are presented. It is demonstrated that physiographic units can be characterized in terms of their surface energy balance. The mapping of actual evaporation by satellite methods and ground measurements is shown.
