(GBR) Phys. Chem. Earth Glucosamine as a biochemical marker for dynoflagellates in phosphatised sediments. Glucosamine comme marqueur biologique pour les dinoflagéllés dans les roches phosphatées. Microscopic studies have shown that Dinoflagellate cysts are well preserved in the phosphatised sediments in the Tunisian Basin of Gafsa. The composition of these cysts has been studied and it has been shown that N-acetyl glucosamine is an essential component. This has been done by content of glucosamine colorimetrically, chromatographically and optically by specific marking of the N-acetyl glucosamine with a fluorescent lectin. More than 80 of the glucosamine contained in the rock appears to be concentrated in Dinoflagellate cysts. This amino-sugar can be considered as a geochemical fossil from these organisms.
