Integrated interpretation of fracture conductivity using electrical borehole scans and full-wave form sonic data. New borehole geophysical techniques to characterize conductive fractures were tested in the ARCO#2 Ras El Besh well. Fractures crossing the borehole were investigated using electrical borehole images created by Fullbore Formation Microlmager (FMI1) pads and stoneley waves generated by a Dipole Shear Sonic Imager (DS1) tool. Analysis of the FMI resulted in high resolution information regarding fracture location, orientation and morphology for the very near-borehole (<5cm) region. Lower resolution estimations of fracture apertures were obtained for larger distances (2-3 m) away from the borehole using reflected Stoneley-wave analysis. Here the reflected Stoneley waves are generated by fluid movement, excited by the direct Stoneley wave, into conductive fractures crossing the borehole. The magnitude of the reflected Stoneley wave depents on the conductivity of the fractures, and fracture apertures were estimated using measured Stoneley-wave reflectivity and theoretical relation ships for idealized parallel plate fractures. The low frequency Stoneley wave is relatively insensitive to drilling induced fractures that extend only a short distance from the ebrehole: while the shallow penetrating electrical borehole scans sees all fractures equally. Final interpretation of the conductive fracture networks was achieved using the reflected Stoneley wave results to discriminate the elctrical borehole scans for fractures that extend away from the borehole into the reservoir.
