A fresh approach to the Metlaoui Initial studies of the early Eocene Metlaoui Group were based on detailed analysis of the onshore sections. As a result of new intergrated examination of the biostratigraphic and sedimentological data from a large number of offshore wells a fresh interpretation is proposed for the depositional parameters controlling distribution for this group. A concurrent petroleum geochemistry study has helped to determine the regional maturity of the Metlaoui and to identify hydrocarbon progenitors.The combination of the geochemical, stratigraphic and sedimentologic data allows the assessment of basin subsidence and maturity evaluation. This is supported by a review of regional heat flow data. In order to place this study into a wider regional context, the Ashtart field in the Gulf of Gabes and the Bourri field in offshore Libya are also considered.
