N°73 (TUN) Notes Serv. Géol. N°73 The anterior dentition of Libycosaurus anisae and Kenyapotamus coryndoni from Beglia, Tunisia : implications for the affinities of anthracotheres and hippopotamids. The Beglia anthracotheres attributed to Libycosaurus anisae have taken on a new importance due to the current debate concerning the origins of Hippopotamidae. Some of the evidence recently used to support the view that hippopotamids descended from anthracotheres consists of the morphology and growth parameters of The incisors and canines, among other characters. There are many anthracothere incisors and canines from Beglia, permitting a detailed examination of the purported prolonged growth of these teeth in the genus Libycosaurus which is one of the mainstays of the thesis that among the Cetartiodactyla, the hippopotamids are most closely related to anthracotheres.
