Geological patrimony (Generalities)

In Tunisia, there exist geological sites which have a scientific, pedagogic and also esthetic interest. They often represent their region’s symbols, such as Tabarka’s Aiguilles, Oued Thelja’s gorges in the region of Gafsa and Jugurtha’s Table in Kef region.

The ensemble of these sites represents the geological patrimony, which is an integrated part of the national-natural patrimony.

The main objective of the valorization and maintenance of this geological patrimony is to protect this richness and its diversity so as to promote it in the scientific, pedagogic, cultural and tourist domains.

This program includes two constituents :

  • Management of the ONM’s collection of the geological museum: updating and enrichment of the paleontological, mineralogical and petrographical collection.
  • The enrichment of the geological patrimony and its exploitation in the regional development: inventory, valorization and maintenance of the most remarkable geological sites.
