N°180 (DEU) Palaeontogr. : Abt. A N°180 Stratigraphy, biogeography and taxinomy of some lower and middle Devonian brochiopod-bearing beds of Libya and northern Niger. Stratigraphie, biogéographie et taxinomie de couches à brochiopodes de Dévonien inférieur et moyen de Libye et Niger Nord. The currently available Libyan Givetian articulate brachiopods are described, including six genera. Several allied forms from adjacent Niger are also described. Plicostropheodonta from the subsurface Early Devonian of adjacent southern Tunisia is illustrated, as are the available, Early Devonian brachiopods from surface exposures of western Libya. The biogeographic affinities of the Libyan Devonian are with the Old World Realm. The brachiopod communities of the Libyan surface exposures are all of the shallow water type. The distribution of the major disconformity separating the Early Devonian from the pre-Devonian in the strip extending from central Arabia, southwest to southern Libya, northern Niger and Chad, southeastern Algeria, coastal Ghana, and the Amazo Basin of Brazil is reviewed, and related to the conformable sequence occurring to the northwest. The reliability of the age determination assigned to the mid-Early Devonian arborescent lycopods from Libya is reviewed.
